Why Metal Rings Can Stain

| October 6, 2009

If you’ve ever had a piece of jewelry that leaves a yellowish spot on your skin you’ve most likely asked yourself what the cause is. Usually - there is a reaction caused by basic metals to just about everyone who wears jewelry that is cheaper.
This occurs to some people more quickly than others~ though, due to the fact that everyone has different skin.

Truth be told expensive jewelry can turn people’s skin green; because it’s not one hundred percent pure<, regardless of cost. Platinum hardly ever reacts with skin so no worries if you own platinum jewelry.
To try to stop gold jewelry from turning your skin green make sure that you don’t have plated gold – the base metal might be cheap and then covered with gold that can rub off. For ‘real’ gold jewelry choosing a higher karat only can help reduce the marks that are left on your skin.
Copper will green your skin and there isn’t a whole lot you can do about that.

Stay away from wearing jewelry when you’re sweating a lot because that can speed up the reaction between your skin and the metal and also ask your jeweler if there is anything that he can coat the jewelry item with – to minimize the amount of green reaction your skin has. If you can find something to keep the reaction to a minimum you should be able to wear your jewelry quite often.
Just remember- the green discoloration isn’t harmful. It’s just a skin reaction and not an allergy. Metal allergic reactions causes reddening plus it could also make your skin feel itchy and inflamed. It’s not anything like a green skin reaction. so make sure if you notice an allergy developing that you stop wearing your jewelry right away. If all you have is green skin you are safe to keep wearing the jewelry you’ll just have to keep the area clean to avoid having it look bad.

Truth be told coating your jewelry is probably the answer.
